Hints and Tips
Cat deterrent - spray tea bags (either new or
used) with Ralgex (Deep Heat). Bury the teabags just below
the surface of the soil - when the cat disturbs them they will give
off the scent of the spray which the cats cannot stand. The
tea bags will break down and nourish the soil.
Slugs and snails - tempt them away with skins
of oranges and grapefruits. Spray WD40 on pots - they do not like
crawling through it. Put mineral felt roofing material around
plants or alternatively horse hair.
Hostas get eaten as soon as they start to grow in spring.
Remove the top soil from the growing tips to remove any slug
or snail eggs that have laid dormant through the winter.
Replace with fresh soil.
Aphids - grow yellow/orange flowers to attract
hoverflies who eat aphids lay their eggs amongst aphid
colonies.
Feeding Roses - use banana skins as a mulch -
roses feed off the potassium released.
Tomatoes - to fee , put a handful of
hoover bag flug, damped down, around the plants
