The Following has been
released by the CCC
Consult the Community
Campaign
On the 8th of June the proposed merger of Brockham,
Betchworth and Leigh schools was announced and the new name was
released - The North Downs Primary School.
Due to the limited consultation that was conducted by the
Temporary Governing Body, this took the village community by
surprise. As a consequence, on the 15th June a public
meeting was called at short notice, and yet over 100 people packed
the meeting room to express their opinion.
All were in favour of the merger, as this would ensure the
continuance of schools at the sites at Betchworth and Leigh.
However, opinion was overwhelmingly against the proposed name, and
in favour of a wider consultation process. Alternative names
suggested were, Brockham Acorns, Betchworth Acorns and
Leigh Acorns.
These carried the full support of parents, pupils, and the
local community and satisfied the TGB requirements.
It was widely assumed that a community consultation process
would then take place. However, this did not occur and on the
24th June the TGB confirmed that the Schools would be
renamed The North Downs Primary School.
In order to provide a way for the community to express their
opinions, the 'Consult the Community Campaign' has been set up. Its
aim is simply
● To provide a wider
consultation process on the New Name
● To provide a wider
consultation on the New Uniform
● Re-establish
confidence in School Governance
To that end, there will be information updates regularly posted
around the village.. Please feel free to share your thoughts, or to
copy us in on your mails, at consultthecommunity@gmail.com
As a community, we are intensely proud of our village schools
and wish to preserve the special relationship that exists between
us. Lets keep it that way.
