News from Brockham & Buckland Guides

  Brockham Guide Unit

We meet on Thursdays from 7.00 to 8.45 p.m. in Brockham Church Hall.

This is a taste of what we did last year.

In the Autumn Term we were given a guided tour of the Mynthurst Farm gardens, entertained the Friends of Guiding AGM with a Cheerleading routine.  We attended the Remembrance Service at Brockham Church.  The Guides raised £139 for our new sister Guide unit at Buckland by organising a Fundraising evening of games, crafts and refreshments.  Brockham Scouts joined us for a pre-Christmas Disco and for our Christmas treat the Guides and Leaders visited the Imax at Waterloo to see The Polar Express in 3D.

Some of our Guides waitressed at the Good Companions Christmas Party in January and helped at the Hot Cross Bun morning in March.

We joined the Scouts for a snowy walk and watched them sledging at the Chimney Pots before returning to the Church Hall for hot chocolate and marshmallows.

We spent our Easter Term 'travelling' to a different country each week for our Round the World 'Go For It'.  We played Takraw (volleyball) in Thailand, travelled over the Kenyan Safari in air balloons, cooked pancakes for Mardi Gras in Brazil, learned hieroglyphics and mummified a Guide in Egypt, made story brick wall for the Great Wall of China, and a world quiz with Buckland Guides. We finished with dream pillows for our future.

In the Summer Term we attended the St George's Day parade and Service with all the other Scout and Guide units in Dorking and won the trophy for the Best Guide unit at the inspection.  We lit and cooked on wood fires at a couple of meeting in practice for the annual Scout/Guide Cooking Competition at the Ranmore Scout Camp site and our Lion patrol won.  We had a walk around Boider Hurst on Headley Heath, to Punchbowl Woods for a quiz, and finished the term with a walk over Boxhill to the Stepping Stones for chips.

In the May Half Term 50 Brockham and Buckland Guides and Leaders travelled to Blackland Farm Guide Camp for a fantastic Ancient Greek Camp.  We were blessed with good weather and had a great time making togas and belts, doing the Crate Challenge and Bungee Trampolining.  We had a hilarious Olympic Games, enjoyed wide games in the wood, cooking over wood fires, shopping in the Camp Shop and each others company.

We have a Waiting List, so if you are interested in joining us please contact Madeline Reichtel on 01737 843782.

Centenary Celebrations

Campfire roaring while children are snoring

Activities are fun after chores are done

Mealtimes are great, I love the food on my plate

People playing having fun, while around the woods we run

In the tent we have good feasts of all the sweets we love to eat

Songs around the fire, it really does inspire

Bungee trampolining in the sky, I can feel it oh so high

Evening goes by with our story tellers; it's a joy without the fellas

Sun rises up, the birds start to call; out of the tent we sleepily crawl

Time's gone by, it's time to go; it's gone so quickly we'll miss it so

Poem written by Ellie, Emma, Edie, and Sophie of the Red Charioteers Patrol at the Brockham and Buckland Guide Camp at Blackland Farm in May 2009.

We felt that this verse written by our youngest Guides showed what a wonderful time we have at Camp.  We are now looking forward to everything about Guides in the coming year which is celebrating one hundred years of Guiding.  We have the opportunity to join all the Guide units in the South East of England at a Centenary Camp in the New Forest next summer.  We will be spending this year fundraising towards the cost of the trip.  Please look out for posters for our events and help us to make the Camp available to all the Guides in our units.

Forthcoming Events include:

Sunday, 4th October           Brockham Church Teas from 2.30 to 5.00 p.m.

Sunday, 18th October        Car Boot Sale in Brockham School Field

Times to be arranged

Thursday, 22nd October    Shop at Strood Green Delivery Service to Kenward Court.  We will be asking the residents of Kenward Court to place their order with the Shop and the Guides and Leaders will deliver to their door between 6.00 and 7.00 p.m.  We ask only for a donation to our Centenary Camp Fund for this service.
