The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate the anniversary of The Queen's coronation. It is the MBE for volunteer groups.The Lord Lieutenant presented the award to chairman Bob Thomas and certificates to younger members who had made a significant contribution since the formation of the team. Some of BERT’s equipment was on display and the Lord Lieutenant met several of the volunteers who explained their role. Tea was provided in the church garden by volunteers from St Catherine’s Hospice charity who the Lord Lieutenant was delighted to meet and learn of the development programme for a new hospice.
