Notes From the Parish Council
Strood Green Post Office

As you know, the sub-post office at Strood Green Stores is under threat and a Committee is currently examining ways both to retain the PO and also to secure the future of the shop itself (which is for sale). For most villages the post office and shop is a vital lifeline and for some people, especially those without transport, it is their only connection with the world outside their front door. It is a meeting place, communication centre and an important lynch pin of village life. The loss we are facing would have a detrimental effect on Brockham, Leigh and the surrounding rural area. It is said that a good village shop and post office can boost property values by up to 25%!

Much of the appeal of our villages rests on their sense of community. It is the reason many people have moved to this area and remain here. With this in mind, the Committee has decided to take action and proceed with a project that could result in Strood Green Stores being purchased and run as a community-owned shop. This kind of venture has been successfully achieved in other villages.

This questionnaire is a vital part of the first step. A business plan is being put together, but as we need to raise a figure in excess of £300,000, the Committee has to gauge the community’s commitment and interest in such a scheme. If there is a strong level of support, the Committee will continue to work enthusiastically on your behalf.

If you have any comments, or suggestions, please contact the committee at: savethepostoffice@brockham.org

We need your views on the services currently provided by the shop and PO, and those that could be provided in the future. We also need to hear from you if you feel you could contribute financially. We have already had the offer of a substantial interest-free loan, but we shall need much more. The back page of this questionnaire gives you the opportunity to indicate your willingness to participate in this enterprise financially and/or by offering skills.

A PUBLIC MEETING will be held in April to determine future action, at which the results of this survey will be available. This initiative has the full support of Brockham Parish Council and Brockham Green Village Society.
