Brockham Parish Council
Strood Green Post Office

Following the public meeting on 3rd March a Committee was formed to look at all the options for retaining a post office in Brockham.

It soon became apparent that the best and most permanent solution to secure the future of both the post office and Strood Green Stores itself might be for the community to buy the premises from the present owners.

A questionnaire was circulated to every household in Brockham and Leigh, in which people were asked for their views on the shop and PO and an indication of whether they might be prepared to make a financial contribution.

The initial response rate was a pleasing 20%, and it was apparent that many villagers were very happy to contribute in some way. The Committee is therefore pressing ahead with plans to acquire the shop for the community. This can be done by forming an Industrial Provident Society, offering shares and debentures, raising loans and donations, and applying for government grants.

Negotiations are also amicably under way with the shop owners. A public meeting will be held in Brockham Village Hall on Wednesday 11 May at which the mechanics of the scheme will be described and a Board of Directors appointed.

Explanatory literature and application forms will be circulated around the villages soon after. We do need a good turn-out at the meeting so please try to attend!

There have been several offers of help but the committee still needs enthusiastic supporters for the large task ahead.

If you feel you can help in any way please contact Helen Melia on 843452 or helen@helenmelia.wanadoo.co.uk.
