The old Smithy is located just across from the village School in Wheelers lane. It was owned by Mr Beasley (Left) a friendly old gent who would allow us kids to help him when he was sharpening knives, hedge trimers etc. We would turn the handle of the very large grindstone which was about 4 foot in diameter. The wheel was located on the south side of building and was covered by a wooden lean-to which we had to remove. There was a small tin can with a tap, this was filled with water and hung over the stone, water was dribbled onto the wheel keeping wet whilst he was honing the tools. It was hard work but we loved it.
