Brockham War Memorial

Essential renovation is now needed

Many of you have noticed that for last two years the cross at the top of the Memorial has been missing.  Erosion had taken its toll and one windy night it fell.  Unfortunately, we have found it difficult to obtain quotations for the replacement.  Recently we were given a lead, so now we have the necessary estimates.

On inspection further problems were found, so it was decided that a thorough renovation was necessary.  Members of the Brockham British Legion initiated this project, but have now handed over the control of the project to a sub-committee of the Brockham Parish Council under the chairmanship of Roger Hammond, with powers to co-opt addition persons onto the committee.  This was approved at a meeting of the Parish Council on 6 th May 2008.  There are certain financial advantages available if the Parish Council takes on the co-ordination and control of the project.

It is the intention to have the work completed in good time for Remembrance Sunday in November.  This would be wonderful as this year is the 90 th Anniversary of the implementation of the Armistice in 1918 and the end of the sacrifice being made by so many men of our village in the Great War.  However, we have many problems to solve before we can give the go-ahead to the chosen stonemason.  Obviously, we will have to fit in with the availability of the contractor, and allow time for the site to be restored at the end of the work, in readiness for Remembrance Sunday. We also have to raise something in the region of £10000 before we can give the go-ahead to the stonemason.

If you wish to support the ‘Renovation’, financially, by a donation no matter how large or small, or in any other way, the committee will be pleased to hear from you.
