Crime Trends of note:
Over the last two weeks there have been a number of high value
thefts occurring throughout the Mole Valley area. The majority of
these have involved breaking into secured outbuildings (sheds or
barns) and taking the equipment that is stored inside. The
offenders have gained entry onto properties by climbing over fences
or coming through bushes.
Not only have we seen private properties being attacked but also
business premises have been hit, with the theft of £6500 worth of
stainless steel tables. So if anyone tries to sell you a table from
the back of a van then please call the Police immediately.
Fly Tipping seems to be on the increase with reports coming in
of over 200 tyres being dumped in the Nation Trust car parks by
fourwents pond. This crime is very hard to tackle as it only takes
seconds to dump the contents of a vehicle and then be off again. If
you do see any fly tipping then please call in and we can check to
see if there is evidence left within the rubbish that may help
track the owner of it.

CN56 BVX - White Iveco Transit van stolen from a burglary in
Buckland.
June 30, 2010
AN image has been released of a bearded man police want to speak
to in connection with an antiques shop burglary in which thousands
of pounds worth of items were stolen.
They included valuable oil paintings and pieces of furniture, and
were taken at around 7.40pm on Sunday, June 13 when two men broke
into Antique Elegance in Dorking's West Street.
It was the latest in a series of raids at antiques stores in the
road, and traders have voiced their frustration about the thieves
avoiding detection on CCTV systems. But police have a picture of
one man loading a table into the back of a van during last week's
incident, and they are hopeful someone will be able to help
identify him.
The flat above Antique Elegance was broken into and attempts
were then made to enter the shop using a pickaxe and spade. When
this failed, the front window was smashed. A member of public
spotted the men and they then jumped into a dirty white van and
drove off. The vehicle was described as a Mercedes Sprinter van
with a distinctive near-side sliding door. It was dark coloured and
had some writing on the near-side rear panel.
Police described the first suspect as a white man in his mid-50s
who was 6ft 3in tall and had short, scruffy light grey hair and a
grey beard. He was wearing a navy blue jacket with a red strip on
the collar and light or green coloured trousers, as well as a black
baseball cap with a distinctive piping round the edge. The man
spoke with a southern accent. The second man was white and in his
mid to late 50s, 5ft 7in tall, of medium build and with scruffy
white hair. He was wearing neutral coloured clothes, a cloth cap
and tan coloured gloves.
Detective Constable Dion O'Shea said: "The image clearly shows the
first suspect loading a small table into the back of the van and
you can see the stolen paintings which are already loaded into the
van. "We know the van, a white Mercedes Sprinter with false number
plates, was driven off in the direction of the High Street and then
along Dene Street, but after that we have no further sightings.
"Can you help? Do you remember seeing these men and the van in the
Dorking area on Sunday evening?" The crime followed a dawn raid at
the nearby Surrey Hills Antiques Centre on June 7, and two
break-ins at Talbot House Antiques Centre earlier this year.
Shopkeepers from West Street, who have spoken of their frustration
at being persistently targeted by thieves, are to meet with police
and Mole Valley MP Sir Paul Beresford on July 8 to discuss the
issue.
Anyone with information about last week's incident is asked to
call Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222, quoting reference MV/10/2512,
or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111

TWO men tricked their way into an 86-year-old man's Bookham home
last week by pretending to be police officers.
They went to the home in Leatherhead Road at 10.30 on Thursday
(May 20), asking to be let in under the pretence of "just wanting
to look around".
Once inside both men repeatedly asked the victim if he had any
money, and when he said he did not, one of the thugs pushed him
into his kitchen and held him there while the other one searched
the home.
Both were wearing plain clothes and are described as white men,
of thin build, around 5ft 9ins and in their 40s. One had a
moustache and black hair.
Investigating officer, detective constable Nicola Finlayson
said: "This is a particularly worrying burglary as the victim was
duped into letting the suspects into his home because he thought
they were police officers.
"Once again these despicable people preyed on the trust and the
vulnerability of their victim. The elderly gentleman is frail and
has been left very shaken by the whole experience."
Police have carried out house to house inquiries and a number of
neighbours saw a small hatchback car, which may be silver, and was
in the area at the time of the burglary. There were three men in
their 20s inside.
One of these men was wearing a white jumper with horizontal
bands and another had a blue short-sleeved shirt on. Police want to
find out who the owner of the car is, and who was seen inside
it.
DC Finlayson added: "I would also urge the local community to
watch out for anyone calling on friends and family to double check
their credentials or perhaps challenge someone you don't recognise
calling at an elderly neighbour's house."
Anyone concerned about a visitor can call Surrey Police on 0845
125 2222, and those with information about the Bookham incident, in
which nothing was stolen, should call the same number quoting
reference MV/10/2078, or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555

Elderly shopper has purse stolen in Epsom
May 26, 2010
EPSOM shoppers have been advised to be vigilant after an elderly
woman had her purse stolen.
The incident occurred on Thursday 20 May when the 78-year-old
woman was targeted between 12.45 and 1pm in Epsom town centre.
The victim had used the purse prior to getting on a bus and did
not notice it was missing until she got off.
Detective constable David Warner said: "It is easy to become
distracted when you are out and about but I would urge people to
always be aware of their surroundings and other pedestrians or
shoppers who may be standing nearby."
Police are advising people to keep bags close by at all times
and to stay close to any shopping trolleys containing bags.
Anyone with information regarding this theft is urged to contact

Appeal for witnesses following distraction style thefts
Surrey Police is appealing for witnesses following two distraction
style thefts in which motorists were targeted in supermarket car
parks in Reigate and Hookwood.
The first incident happened at 1.30pm on Tuesday, 2 February, as a
lady was loading her car with shopping bags in Morrisons, Bell
Street, car park she was beckoned by the driver of another
vehicle.
A black Mercedes had parked in front of her car, blocking her
exit, and the driver was asking the victim for directions to the
nearest hospital. When the lady returned to her car she realised
her credit and debit cards had been stolen. The cards were used
10-minutes later to withdraw hundreds of pounds from her bank
account and to purchase £500 worth of men's clothing.
The suspect is described as a white eastern European man, aged in
his mid 40s, stocky build with cropped dark hair. He was driving an
old black Mercedes.
The second incident happened sometime between 11.30am and 11.50am
on Wednesday, 3 February, when a shopper returned to her car parked
in Tesco car park, Reigate Road, Hookwood. A black Mercedes blocked
her exit and the driver beeped the horn to get the victim's
attention. When the lady approached the vehicle the driver asked
for directions to the nearest hospital. As the victim got back in
her car she noticed her passenger door was ajar and her wallet was
missing.
Investigating officer PC Siobhan Gleeson said: "We are looking
into potential CCTV opportunities from Morrisons car park which
will hopefully show us the black Mercedes and those responsible for
these thefts.
"Clearly the same suspects are targeting shoppers in the area and
we are reminding people to remain vigilant at all times as these
suspects could try to distract others.
"It is so important shoppers do not get distracted when loading or
unloading their vehicles and always keep your valuables securely
locked away.
"I am asking people to think back and if you were in either of the
supermarket car parks on those days please come forward and provide
me with the information I need in order to bring the people
responsible to justice."
Anyone with any information regarding these incidents is
encouraged to contact Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222, quoting
reference number RB/10/1076 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800
555111.
Call 0845 125 2222 for all non-emergency policing matters.
Call 999 if you have a genuine emergency requiring the attendance
of the police (eg a crime is in progress or someone is in immediate
danger).

Elderly man conned out of £24,000
A 76-year-old man has been conned out of thousands of pounds by
rogue tradesmen who offered to carry out work on the chimney at his
home in Surrey.
The pensioner, from Banstead, was approached by three men who
offered to check the chimney stack for £25.
Police said he was then asked to pay a £4,000 deposit to repair
the "extremely dangerous" chimney, and within four days had handed
over £24,000 in total.
The suspects were described as white men who spoke with Irish
accents.
Det Insp Richard Hamlin said: "The main conman, who called himself
Mr O'Hara, was very confident, plausible and convinced the victim
he was dealing with a legitimate and reputable company.
"He extorted £24,000 from this pensioner in less than a week which
is more than some people earn in a year."
He said the suspects then asked for an additional £20,000 which
was when the victim contacted Surrey Police and trading standards
officers.

Thief takes £2,600 Christmas cash
A 75-year-old woman had more than £2,600 stolen from her handbag
minutes after she had withdrawn the cash from her Christmas savings
account.
Police believe the woman was targeted as she waited in the Post
Office in Epsom High Street on 26 October shortly after putting the
cash in her wallet.
A man next to her insisted she pick up some money from the floor
and as she did so she felt a tug on her bag.
She realised the savings were missing as the man vanished from the
premises.
'Particularly nasty'
The victim was not able to give a description of the thief, but he
was with a woman and both had heavy eastern European accents.
They left the Post Office in opposite directions.
"This is a particularly nasty crime, as we believe this elderly
lady was deliberately targeted," said Det Con Rebecca
Sargeant.
"Only minutes earlier she had withdrawn her entire Christmas
savings, money which should have been spent on herself, her husband
and their family.
"Instead these callous thieves have deprived them of that."
Ms Sargeant appealed to anyone who was in the High Street at about
1115 GMT to come forward with any information.

There were about 30 - 40 youths at the Old Orchard last
night.
Myself and a Special went down there as I had a tip off that there
may be a 'party'. Unfortunately as there was only two of us we only
managed to catch 8 of the youths. However a lot of drink was
confiscated and cans/bottles emptied.
We picked some of the rubbish up and left it in a black bin
bag.
Patrols throughout the evening by both of us found the remaining
youths on the Rugby Field and Cricket Field. More drink was
confiscated on both occasions. Another lot were intercepted
on the Coach Road with the same result.
Names taken show that the Youths came from Brockham, Betchworth,
Dorking Town, North Holmwood, West Humble, in other words, all
around so this was an 'organised' event.
We will be doing the same patrol tonight but I do not think they
will return to this area so hopefully we will have a peaceful
night.

£18,500 raid on mobile phone shop
Equipment worth £18,500 has been stolen in a robbery at a mobile
phone shop in east Surrey.
Police said two men entered the Carphone Warehouse in Dorking at
about noon on Thursday and told staff to go into the
stockroom.
They filled up two bags with high-value mobile phones and a laptop
computer.
Officers said no weapons were used in the raid and the workers
were not harmed. The thieves drove off in a car parked in the store
car park.
Appealing for witnesses, Det Con Leigh Wall said: "This was a
planned robbery where thieves have stolen a significant amount of
expensive equipment.
"This offence took place on the High Street at lunchtime and in
broad daylight so the area would have been busy with shoppers and
other members of the public."

'Antisocial' drivers' cars seized
Two young drivers have had their cars seized in Surrey after
police said they caught the pair driving antisocially.
Both had previously been warned by officers about their driving
and were told that they risked having their cars taken away if they

One of the cars was speeding around the roundabout in North
Holmwood, near Dorking, with its tyres screeching, Surrey Police
said.

dangerously.

A card from Mr J Collins of South Coast Galleries seeking to buy
all manner of articles has been circulated in the village. You will
note if you have the card there is only a mobile number and no
address, web site or email contact. Mr Collins says he will call in
the next few days. You are advised to be very circumspect in
dealing with this type of company and it may well be that you
decide not to invite them into the house no matter how plausible
they may seem.
It is important to add that I know nothing to the detriment of the
company or Mr Collins but as with all callers seeking to buy things
at the door be careful as there is a history in Brockham of dealers
entering the house and jewellery disappearing. Again I must
emphasis I know nothing to the detriment of this caller or his
company.

Raider uses cat flap in break-in
A burglar stole property worth more than a thousand pounds from a
house in Surrey after reaching through the cat flap for the door
key.
Police said the offender broke the flap in order to reach the key
which had been left in the door of the house in Cranleigh on Monday
night.
The burglar searched the house in Guildford Road and took a
television and jewellery.
Officers said the occupants of the house had gone out at the
time.
Security measures
The watch, bracelet, necklace and television that were taken
between 2030 and 2130 BST were valued at £1,189.
Crime reduction advisor John Robini advised cat owners to use
lockable cat flaps.
He also suggested people think carefully about where they fit cat
flaps and have them leading to an outbuilding, a shed, a garage, or
a room that can be locked from the rest of the house.
People should not leave keys in locks or valuable items near cat
flaps, letterboxes or open windows, and use house alarms if they
have them, he added.

SUMMER RAVES
The summer period increases the risk of rural raves, which often
result in crop and machinery damage, noise nuisance and other
serious problems within the rural area.
If you own land that may be attractive to illegal rave organisers
please consider additional measures that would frustrate vehicle
access and make these much more difficult to set up.
As a short term measure farmers and land owners may wish to
consider placing heavy and immobilised machinery at likely access
points to inhibit those wishing to attend with vehicles and set up
the rave
Most raves occur at weekends and the set up will often start at
dusk. If you see vehicles that may be used to carry rave equipment
accessing remote locations. Please contact the police immediately.
Raves are often very difficult for the police to close down once
they have established themselves, but can often be stopped before
the music starts.
Early notification of suspicious activity can assist the police in
stopping a rave before the situation develops into a full scale
event.

Appeal for information after horses injured in Headley
Two horses were deliberately attacked in Lodge Bottom Lane,
Headley. Both incidents happened sometime between 7.30pm on Friday,
16 January, and 12pm on Saturday, 17 January when each animals
right eye were punctured with an air pellet.
The horses, an eight-year-old Shetland miniature crossed with a
Falabella, and a 16.1 hand Clydesdale Cob, are under-going
emergency veterinary treatment to try to save their sight.
This was a deliberate and shocking act of animal cruelty. This
incident has distressed the owners and the whole equestrian
community in the area which is why I am appealing to members of the
public to help us.
Do you know who could have done this to two horses It is
particularly concerning as this incident comes only a few weeks
after a bull was injured in Slough Lane. At the moment we are not
ruling out that the two incidents are connected which is why we
need information from the community.
I am urgently appealing to anyone with any information at all, no
matter how insignificant it may seem to you, to come forward.
Clearly those responsible need to be identified as a matter of
urgency. Any information however small needs to be reported and I
will work hard to bring those responsible to justice.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Surrey Police on 0845
125 2222 quoting reference MV/09/242.

Christmas Advice - As Christmas approaches can we give the
following advice about looking after yourself and family for the
festive season and beyond
" Always secure and lock your doors and windows, even if you are
just popping out - about one in four burglaries happen simply
because the householder left windows or doors unlocked.
" Make sure your external security lights are in working order and
put internal lamps on timer switches to come on when dark if you
are away.
" Always use your burglar alarm - if you don't have an alarm,
consider investing in one.
" Don't store keys near the front door particularly where they can
be seen and never hang a spare key inside the letter box or hidden
in a convenient hiding place such as under the mat or beneath a
flowerpot - keep them in an accessible place away from the door
known only to members of the household.
" Secure garages and sheds - they are often full of expensive
tools that are attractive to a thief and ideal to use for breaking
into your home.
" Don't leave Christmas presents under the tree in full view of
burglars who may be peering through windows - keep them in a secure
place until the big day.
" Don't put your empty boxes from Christmas presents (or any new
purchases) out until your recycling collection day and make sure
you break up the boxes and secure them together - the boxes and
wrappings provide burglars with just the information they are
looking for to see what new gadgets and items await them
inside.
" Postcode your property with a permanent marker pen or
ultra-violet marker pen depending on the type of object being
marked - this will make it harder for a thief to sell the items and
easier for the police to identify the true owner if they are
recovered.
" Note down the serial numbers of all electrical goods such as
TVs, DVD players, computers and camera equipment and keep the list
out of sight in a secure place. It is also a good idea to
photograph valuable items such as jewellery and pictures as this
will help with identification if the items are recovered.
" Shopping for Christmas can be busy and stressful - be aware of
your surroundings, watch out for pickpockets, keep bags zipped up
and ensure wallets and purses are not visible. Never hang handbags
on pushchairs or shopping trolleys.
" Don't leave your shopping on display in your car and make sure
your car is locked and secure.
